Chess is NOT a sport!!!

Right, I don't think anybody really thinks that chess is a sport. Fishing is a good one, no I don't think it is a sport though. It's either a profession, a hobby, or a competition.
So, what defines a sport? Everyone knows that football/soccer is a sport, along with baseball, cricket, and tennis. Some people think that table tennis is a sport - but what is it about table tennis that makes it a maybe?
I kind of like the "if it's in the olympics then it's a sport" but is that _really_ true?? And even if it were, then it is perhaps sufficient but clearly not necessary (cricket).

I don't know how much longer I can keep from posting to this silly thread. It keeps beckoning me from the Recent Forum Topics list. Maybe I'll just pop in for a minute and spread some love.

And chess isn't a sport!!!
Wait, I want to change my answer. Answer is, it's semantics. Chess is what it is. It transcends a label like game or sport. It's chess.

I disagree with all of you...Chess IS indeed a sport! It's a mental sport requiring skill, great agility, frequent exercise and a commitment to being competitive. To me, it meets all of the quailifications of a "sport"! Now, I will say that there ISa creative art to this sport, but there is art in many sports. The sport of competitive fighting demands immense physical training and force from the human body, but at the end of the day is still called....Martial Arts!

I can't believe I am going into this forum still taking part in this, I am getting aheadache anyway here is goes, somebody point out that we all agreed that chess, soccer, football are called GAMES [fun, activites, hobbies pasitimes] right? so it when these games become more serious and organised it brought into a competition, tournament which is govern by a organisation then it become a sport or sporting events.Over the years word for sport have change.Did you know many year ago card games like Fish, beggar my niegbour and many other childen game used be a gambling game!Well that all has change now, children play them now for fun not money.Does that make sense ozzie or anyone?
ps the word game and sport nearly mean the same thing

yes we can,we can use real live person dress up as chess pieces with real swords and daggers and let have a real battle out there with real blood! King Arhur would have love to see this in his tourament [bugger,I wish had see this!] !!

I'm sure you just picked definintions that had PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. And the quote "will defend the "sportiness" of chess" if you say it's not a sport then what sportiness is there to defend. yes i will in fact admit that most people think sports as only physical activity but it can also be mentally. because the olympics only have physical sports they made a tournament just like it but with mental games like chess.
here are some definitions that don't have PHYSICAL ACTIVITY in it. I am trying to prove a point so i won't change, add, remove words.
Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively

surely if you are playing and have got to the point where your opponent is in a "pathetic position" it will be relatively simple to finish off the game in just a few moves - it's not such a big deal

For those interested in the semantic side of this arguement I started a topic in the off topic section of the forum called something like - What makes a sport a sport?
I started a second thread because it seems that some people here are interested in the discussion but the thread is bogged down by rather pointless banter (I contributed a fair amount to that).
So for those with more to contribute than "chess is/isn't a sport" and that like a bit of healthy mental stimulation off the chess board, come post.
Even cheater_1 is welcome... if he behaves :P

I just saw this on the web ...
The Official UK chess is a sport Campaign
A new chess petition has just been launched on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk. This petition is to finally get chess recognised as a sport in the UK.
Personally, i don't really care whether its a sport or not.
