“At will” how funny. Free will is a myth.

Will is probably the name of his chess club. Membership is probably free too ...

I just read up on this and it appears to be a legit situation going on. Rulings being made. I mean it is their belief system. They believe that without certain distractions and adhering too a set of values and customs will help their lives and the lives of those they love. That is acceptable to me. However, it is a little sad, the logic that they are using to confirm the need to abstain from the game. It really is. Islam was once the leader in science and innovation. They were the paragon society. Now they shudder at what amounts to superstitions. But again... this is their thing. I have friends who believe in Islam and guide their life by those beliefs. I would miss our games together.

Islam is not a monolithic religion like Catholic Christianity. Not at all.

The Catholics have a Pope, who (with the help of the College of Cardinals) makes rulings that are binding on every Catholic. For better or worse, Catholicism is a highly centralized religion.

Islam is very different. There is no Islamic "Pope", no single religious head who makes rulings that are binding on every Moslem. Islam is divided into a number of sects... both with regard to theological thought (aqidah, tariqa) and also with respect to jurisprudence or legal aspects of religion (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii, Hanbali). The members of particular sects are sometimes very numerous, with hundreds of millions of adherents (Shia, Sunni) or sometimes a relatively small but devoted following (Ibadi, Zaidi, Ismaili).

When you say "Chess is haram", you are grossly over-simplifying the situation. Some Islamic sects have labeled chess as haram. Some have not. Some strongly disapprove of the game. Others are indifferent to it, considering it a game like any other.

Although I would imagine TICCPROW would be said in a calm and polite manner indicated by the P (please). It would sound odd to yell politely

What do you mean? Islam is a monolithic religion, the worship one god, it’s just different to Christianity

You are thinking of the word "monotheistic" - meaning "one God".

The word I used was "monolithic" - meaning "all one piece, indivisible".

Read my post again.

Besides anything mentioned in the Quran and authentic ahadith, everything else is not monolithic, and since it isn’t mentioned directly in Quran and Ahadith scholars need to judge based on Quran and Ahadith whether or not it is Halal or Haram

Exactly.

All branches of Islam accept the Quran and the verified Hadiths as the ultimate truth... just as all Catholics accept the Old and New Testaments as the ultimate truth.

The difference is where they go from there.

For Catholics, anything not specifically stated in the Bible is decided by the Pope and his College of Cardinals. They make rulings that are binding on EVERY Catholic, all over the world.

Islam has no such "Pope", and when some ruling is required that is not already contained in the Quran or the verified Hadiths, each Islamic sect sets its own rules. So chess can be haram for one sect, but halal for another.

That’s what I thought too. It isn’t the Quran saying that the game of chess, or similar games are haram, but rather an external source reporting something which the prophet supposedly said. I don’t remember exactly, but the source was not direct, but coming from a person who has gotten the information from another person who also has gotten the information from another person who supposedly spoke with the prophet and the prophet supposedly said that.

Different Madhabs have said different things. Depends on which you follow.

Alcohol impairs your cognitive ability. Sometimes when you type it seems you are taking too much advice from the cognitively impaired
