I'd say chess was "institutionally ageist"...against young people. I've made this point before. It's no accident that the term "square" is used for out of touch older people. Where do we have squares ? On a chess board !
I hope younger people don't think I'm being patronising with this observation: Young people are very good at giving their attention to rectangles. (I know from a pedagogical point of view a square is a rectangle, but I interject this point to ambush the semanticist strawman arguers...)
Anyway. Young people are good at looking at rectangular shapes. I'm thinking of their phones. To the point that they often knock us old gits over while walking and texting owing to the intensity of their concentration. Chess therefore should abandon it's "squareness" - and perhaps mobile phones should be square to protect the elderly ?
Could be worse.
They are just colours...like some people say: "It's not the gun who kills, it's the person holding/firing it." The game is not racist, but unfortunately some players are...I played a guy who after losing, started the chat by calling me a 'Swedish whore'. Then continued with homophobic remarks, and after I revealed that I am of Asian origin -he then ranted racial comments...Btw. I won the game, and he had black -does that make me a racist too? ;-)
