4x4 driving isn’t a sport, either. Or is it?
As far as I know it is. It's a competition that requires physical skill. I don't see how that would be any different than any other motorsport.

Chess is a board game.
But many players would rather call themselves sportsmen / sportswomen / athletes by playing it, so ... more power to them.
I think the issue is that so many people think of "sport" as noteworthy, and they think of "board game" as diminuitive. It's unfortunate that this is the case. Neither is better or worse - they're just different types of activities.
Just like how singing is different from cooking. Neither is superior - they're just different.
Either way, I'm not convinced by the "but classical chess is physically grueling, so that makes it a sport!" argument. Maybe it can a physical grind for some players. But the last time I saw Hikaru play classical at the top level, he was meandering around between moves, glancing at other boards, casually sipping on his latte ...

Chess is one of the few sports where in the heat of battle, the fiercest of competition, the edge of your seat suspense at the next turn of events, one of the competitors falls asleep from sheer boredom.
