Chess isn't a sport

Just because something has an international federation does not mean it is a sport, nothing about a federation should make it a sport or not, I hope you aren't trying to say that Kickball isn't a sport, because there is no federation for that, therefore, this definition is flawed

Here is my definition (It is used by sportaccord)

A sport must

  • have an element of competition
  • be in no way harmful to any living creature
  • not rely on equipment provided by a single supplier
  • not rely on any "luck" element specifically designed into the sport.

That isn't what I was trying to say but it is true then that it doesn't meet the IOC's criteria for a sport

wait what, Soccer is a sport but it is harmful to creatures because their natural enviroment is destroyed, Many sports involve leather balls, so they are 100% not animal friendly, once again your definition is flawed

on the IOC's page they dont even list FIFA as a recognized federation, I think we should use my definition because you cannot prove that one wrong

The definition is nuanced but there are degrees of harm, for example, hunting would be harmful, but the manufacturing of chess pieces would not. You may be correct so I will rephrase it:

Actively harming living creatures cannot be central to the sport.

but Hunting is a sport, competitive hunting is physically and mentally demanding, more so than chess

Same with fishing

FIFA is recognized, that list my not have be complete.

Prove me wrong, convince me that chess isn't a sport, that's what you want to do right?

Avatar of YankeesFanForLife

I am doing that, you are throwing countless nonsense definitions at me and I am batting them down one by one, I am currently working on this one.

Avatar of crystal0192

ok whatever, you are using a definition that is not official, but one you came up with, you will not let me do the same, if you were using the official definition, then like I just said, sports using a leather ball would not be sports, but you changed the definition, so now it is your own. I understand that the rules of this debate disallow using non-official definitions, so I will ask you to give me another official definition
