i think the best way to do this is to have a study buddy but i don't think i can find a place that offers this free

I'm still new to the site myself so still exploring different things but from what I've seen you do have other players here that will help you to get better, they'll give you game analysis so can point out your mistakes or errors in a game, this is very helpful if you have a good strong position on the board but still lose due to a small mistake.

The best way to gain knowledge is playing but more importantly losing and learning from those losses.

I'm no master, and I'm sure there are better ways to learn chess, but I'm completely self taught. I didn't have a study buddy or anything. I watched hours and hours of videos here and on YouTube, and whenever I learned something new (and I still do this) I wrote it down in a log book that I could use for reference, and I would also do the same when I read books. If I wanted to learn an opening I would use my openings app to learn it as well as certain variations and then I would study games of masters with that opening. Of course, also a lot of trial and error playing them in games. I've probably done 2000 hours of chess puzzles, here and elsewhere. Chess.com lessons, drills and vision I've also spent hours on. What works for me, when I get into my chess study phases that is, is to soak up as much as I can through any source that I can. I think I have 13 chess apps on my phone. Anyway there's lots of ways to learn out there, and there's video lectures to explain it when needed. Good luck :)
