Chess left brained or right?

Left brain has more to do with logic and reasoning whereas right brain has more to do with creativity. Undoubtedly both are useful to be a successful chess player. Proportionately speaking, do you believe more GMs are artists/musicians, or mathematicians and engineers?

Left for the most part it’s right when you come up with unique ideas, openings, things that may exist but in your brain it’s new.

I think it’s both brains

It’s both left and right brain, yes. Proportionately, do you believe at the top of the list (Grandmasters) there are people who are more left brain than right? I don’t know if any of you are familiar with something like a trimetrix assessment, but it’d be interesting to see whether there’s any consistency of cognitive function/personality among the top players. I would hypothesize that there would be less variance in personality traits/ cognitive function in the top players than variance among general population - or even average chess players.

For music, it's the left side as well funnily enough. I think it's a lot about the left side in chess. however! The right side (responsible for creativity) is responsible for pattern recognition!

So you would suppose that top players would generally display more left brain activity, as far as music, pattern recognition would be big in composition of music

Left/right brain theory has been mostly debunked by modern neurology. Chess, like most intellectual activities involves coordination of brain activity across both hemispheres of the brain.

Left and right brain is a generalization and by no means is meant to conceptualize the entirety of the brain. However, there are commonalities amongst individual’s brain coordinations, as you mention, that lend people different gifts and abilities. These people often times find themselves in similar lines of work. We understand people who are engineers and mathematicians to be inclined to logic and mechanics, while we find artists and musicians to be inclined to creativity and individuality. I like the pattern recognition comment from earlier, that’s seems to be the most logical response 😅

I definitely think Left Brain is more utilized in beginners while learning and retaining theory and practices. However, I can't help but think the Right Brain becomes more important in the more elevated stages of the game. I can't prove it because I'm still a beginner. Ha!
