chess nationality?

I was wondering what my chess nationality is.

I live in England, but I'm citizen of another country. I'm registered with the English Chess Federation, and I've never been registered with any other federation...but my passport has another nationality.

So if I go to an international tournament will I play "for" England?

TheBigDecline

Yup.

In the German Bundesliga we had and have all kinds of foreigners (among them celebrities like Caruana or Anand) representing the teams which bought them in and they are all located in Germany.

plutonia

ok, but they are playing with the team...what if I go playing on my own?

I know there were some controversy regarding Caruana that put forward the idea of playing in the US championship, but apparently that was not possible because he's with the Italian Chess Federation (while having dual citizenship, so iirc he is also a US citizen).

plutonia, according to my knowledge only your affiliated club/team determines whom you're playing against with. So, in an international tournament you'd play for England, no matter where you're originally from.

That's how it's handled at least in my country.
