Chess on television

If my satelite tv operator would offer chess tv channel, I would pay for it. With good commentators and computer graphics it would be much more interesting than many other sports.

Since there has been quitesome games aired around the world, i wonder can those be seen on internet?

Funny it seems every other sports is on TV except chess, for instance fishing, bowling, softball, baseball, soccer, football, horse racing, auto racing, poker, golf, basketball just to name a few. I would watch chess on TV.

I love golf, it takes tons of skill to play well, as do all sports

Golf can be as difficult and as pleasing to play as you want, but watching it on TV is really boring, imho.

In Chess at least you have a lot to think about as a spectator while you're waiting for the actual action (i.e. the move), while in Golf, when the action finally happens, most of the time all you can see is a pointless zoom of the sky where an invisible little ball is supposed to be flying.

I mean: to each his own, and I'm not saying it is stupid or whatever if you like to watch Golf on TV, but I think Chess has objectively more chances to be interesting for non-players than Golf has, as a TV show.

Good commentators are crucial. And beginner shows so people who dont understand chess can hop on the bus,

I read that Howard Stern the media personality loves chess, it would take someone of media connections and popularity to make push to get chess on TV.

Many popular personalities have played, and do play, chess and would be great ambassaors for the game.  Howard Stern, however, gives me the creeps.

It would be a challenge to make the game approachable.  Even though there are many who play chess, it's honestly quite niche.

Knowledgeable and entertaining commentators would be critical.  On top of the live game footage, there needs to be screen real estate dedicated for commentator analysis so any viewer, new and old to the game, can see exactly what lines are possible, what the players may be thinking, and so on.  This helps with my next point:

The viewer must feel engaged, even though they aren't there playing the game.  It must feel like they are making the moves and thinking with the players.  Cooking is mundane, but turn up the intensity like with Iron Chef, and it's like the viewers can relate to the pressure, even if they themselves don't cook.

Recently he was (or still is) a judge on one of those TV talent competitions.

Wow, he must be uber rich by now, he's already in business for decades!

Well, I don't even own a tv, but from what I've seen chess couldn't be much worse. Don't they have shows in which celebrities are used to draw viewers?  Celebrity Chess also has a nice ring to it.

These dang shopping channels take up space.. Most channels are useless and I'm sure the ratings are low.. Chess fans are all over the world with no corner without it being played, of course a chess channel would be the same as a golf, football, or poker channel; only fans will watch.. Chess is a huge part and of course fans will be interested so they will watch.. One channel is good enough which is a good audience able to bring in money for the channel and the SP as well..

Sex and violence is needed for televised chess to work. So I propose a new programme featuring women chess boxing.
