Chess openings for Black

I believe the OP is rated 1500 on Liches.

The main reason is because they cut down on engine users alot better.

They are also smaller community of chess players compared to chess.com which is why it is really possible for him to be that high.

Chess.com is very popular because of its website name. Which is why you have alot more users on chess.com.

More users = more competition = more engine users = tougher games

Which is why people who go from chess.com to liches have higher rankings on liches than they do on chess.com.

or in this case if they go from their to here it be lower ranking.

White usually have 4 main responses other responses are more considered to be side lines.

1.e4 - 1.d4 - 1.c4 - 1.Nf3

Out of the 4 main responses white will use 1.e4 or 1.d4 - 85% of the time compared to others.

Which translate in you having 2 openings as black against those 2 responses.

Eventually you will be able to use 1 of the 2 responses against 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 at a later date.

As a beginner people will recommend to play Classically.

The main reason is so you can get fair amount of space in the position.

Which as black you would respond to 1.e4 with 1...e5

or

1.d4 with 1...d5

I personally do not really like Classical chess so obviously I am not going to recommend it. However, All coaches and higher levels recommend it.

It will avoid you from having to deal with cramped positions etc.

I on the other hand don't mind cramped positions which is why I am more of a hyper-modern type of player myself.

If I was to give you advice on what to play against 1.e4

I would go with 1...e6  French Defense simply because it is easier to play in the lower level's of chess.

You won't get alot of problems and have to worry about alot of Fried Liver crap from the French.

Bascially as black you aim to put all the pawns on light squares.
With moves like e6  and d5

Which protects the f7 square.

Since alot of crazy players in the beginning days love to go for some cheapo scholar mate.

That will save you all the trouble.

Squishey

Looking through some of the games OP played, I would say he's not 1500 strength OTB. Maybe on some random site, but not realy OTB strength.

That being said, playing aggressive and open tactical games is the fastest way for him to improve! I suggest an opening that focus quick development would be good. Scandinavian defense is definitely playable. I recommend OP look for gambit lines that focus on quick development.
