Chess Photographs (≈1950-1970)

I absolutely love photos from this era. Black and white, jackets and ties... They just looked like...heroes?

Very interesting!
I see a lot of this lower down in the chess ranks. Half of the people in a tournament hall over here don't make eye contact at all.
It's no better in the top levels of chess. There is a serious lack of handshaking skills among chess players, who ironically have to do it all the time.

I had posted this photo on my website in 2002, noting then it was my favorite chess photo. It remains true today. A curious coincidence is that this little 6 year old girl today (she works as a veterinary assistant) is the same age as I was when I first posted the picture. In the photo she is playing in a simul vs. Elena Donaldson.

John's wife?
She was actually Elena Orlov at the time but not many people would recognize that name as the 3x US women's champion.

Thanks. I tried to be objective yet stay true to the spirit of the times but a lot of commentors expressed anger at my treatment of Ernesto and Fidel (which I had thought was rather neutral).

Elena Donaldson-Akhmilovskaya was married to Georgi Orlov when she died in 2012. She did a lot for youth chess in my state and she is missed. Her marriage to John Donaldson did not last long.

Not a topic I've been involved on very often, but it's been my experience that if you talk about those pair, whatever you say, someone will slaughter you.
