Hello,

My name is Charlotte Larkman and I am a PhD student working in the Psychology department at the University of Essex. I am keen to recruit able chess players to participate in my research. My study investigates how our knowledge about objects can help us to understand other peoples' actions. For this, I am comparing chess players and non-chess players on a short (approximately 30 minutes)  iPad task. All participants will have the opportunity to win one of five £20 Amazon vouchers. I am only looking to recruit around 40 participants, so there is a good chance of winning one of these vouchers!

A little bit about the study:

Participating in this research involves completing a simple touchscreen task on your iPad (other touchscreen devices can be used, but a screen size smaller than 10 inches is not advised), which will take approximately 30 minutes. You will first be asked to complete 10 checkmate puzzles. You will then see a series of short videos of a hand reaching towards a chessboard and be asked to tap where you saw the hand's final position on the screen. You will also be asked some simple questions about the chess pieces.

The link below will direct you to a consent form, which tells you about the study and asks you a few basic questions (age/sex). At the end of the study, you will have the option to enter your email address to be entered into the draw to win a £20 Amazon voucher. You will then be redirected to another website to complete my chess study.

I would be really grateful for your participation in this study as due to Covid-19 I have had to move my entire PhD research project online. I am also happy to answer any questions you might have about the research.

Thank you so much for your time,

Charlotte
