where and how can I find out about any local players I want to start or join a club... there are no chess club ads in the paper or Facebook.. generally I just can't find any chess players at all anywhere.. it's disheartening I want to have active discussions involving chess and it's proving pretty 🙅

frustrating.. I realize that I could just ask this forum or share ideas with this forum but direct discussion with a player rated preferably much much higher then me could be very beneficial to me

Also, all the larger libraries in my area seem to have a chess club that meets there once a week. Also, most universities probably do, too.

Did you try googling it?

yes nothing on google.. nothing happening at the library but I was thinking that would be a good locale.. but the main problem with that is where can I find any good rated players considering there is no formal club I know of and I really can't find much interest in general.. even from patzers such as myself.. it's disheartening really.. I guess my best bet might be to put in ad in the paper.. I may try Craigslist or kijiji may be better.

Try what I did: find a bookstore or cafe and (with the manager's permission) set up a few chess boards and wait.  Show up regularly at a certain day and time, and repeat this pattern for a least a few weeks/months.  Post a club sign-up list where people can leave their contact info and preferred meeting time.  Email the list once a week to remind them about the club meeting time.

It will be lonely at first, so bring chess books and magazines to kill time.  And keep it light-hearted since many people are intimidated/shy at first.  You will need to be willing to teach beginners.  Have some "how to play chess" flyers ready to give away.  If you can build a steady core group, it makes it even easier to attract more members.  But at all costs make sure everyone remains friendly -- trash-talk tends to drive people away.

Oh, and don't forget to encourage your group to buy tea/coffee/snacks so that you don't wear out your welcome with the manager.
