I'm a book editor, who's published many scholarly books and has read many chess books but has never, until now, published a chess book. At the moment, I find myself in the pleasant position of publishing a biography of a famous player -- mostly just prose, but with an appendix consisting of a half dozen games annotated by a strong contemporary player. Has anyone here been involved in the mechanics of publishing such things in book (or print periodical) form? A couple of specific questions:
Our basic typesetting process involves Word files -- I don't think we can set directly from a PGN. Is there an easy mechanism for converting a PGN into a Word file in a way that will look elegant on the page, or do I just need to do it all by hand? In particular, the annotations (?, !, ?!, !?, etc), export as giberish. Is there an easy way to convert them correctly, or do I need to correct everything manually?
Also, is there a good source for creating diagrams that are of print quality (300 dpi)? I'm assuming there are never rights considerations here -- right? Do I run afoul of any design rules if I just create a diagram through chess.com's analysis too?
