Chess rating system

I see some regular players who started at there rating at 1300, 1400, 1500, etc. How is this possible?

I don't know about the specific ratings but I know that when players sign up for the site via the app, they are able to provide a strength they think they are at (such as beginner, intermediate, etc) and that assigns an initial rating (though I'm not 100% if that is actually used in the rating algorithms or not).

If I draw against a higher rated player does my rating go up?

grandmustard

I agree but logic does not always prevail

The magnitude of the rating decrease.increase is dependent on a number of factors; differences in opponent ratings and their respective RD values. For example, if you draw against a higher rated opponent with a very high RD (meaning the rating is likely inaccurate) and you have a low RD (a very accurate rating) your rating should still go up but won't as much as if the opponent had a low RD.

My chess.com ratings run about 100 points higher than my old USCF ratings. is that consistent with everyone else? Somehow, I don't think I've just gotten that much better. Just another reason to love this site...#egoboost, lol.

Depends on what rating stystems you are talking about. My chess.com blitz is about 350 lower than my regular rating, 200 lower than my OTB blitz (though that is from a small pool of players), and pretty close to my Online USCF blitz. My correspondence is about 300 higher than OTB (but that keeps falling Embarassed). Live standard (with not a whole lot of games) is pretty close to my OTB Quick.

Glicko ratings are used at chess.com.  FIDE & federations should use them but they can't really re-write the system they have.  Its not really possible to change everyone over to Glicko when they are on ELO IMO.  Not possible b/c noone would agree on how to do it.

What does ELO stand for? if it stands for anything at all?

It is Elo, which is a last name and not an acronym. For Arpad Elo who came up with the rating system.

I am just above an 1100, yet have beaten numerous 1300s with ease. Thus, I am convinced that the chess rating system is an intrinsically meaningless scale which exists for no other reason than categorizing the uncategorizable in regards to chess proficiency. It is ill of humanity to devise such contrivances when it is clear that such hierarchies promote socially detrimental bureaucratic paradigms.

I think I'll go back to my woods now.

Viswanathan someone's probably already corrected you but a Queen is 9 points

I hadn't played for about six months or so (February until lately). When I stopped in Feb. my rating was just below 1300. Suddenly my rating was 100 higher without playing one single match! Maybe I reach Kasparov level, if I don't play the next couple of years Wink

I wish there was a way to turn off showing ratings.

1200 is supposed to be the average rating in the elo rating system, so most chess playing websites start all players at 1200.

Well, on ChessKid.com, the starting rating is 600.

Larspp, in October of last year, the site made a major adjustment to standard ratings. I noticed it showed up on some players later than others. I'm guessing thats what you saw.
