Chess rating system

I realize that this isn't the correct place to post this question, but I'm a newcomer to the site and I can't seem to figure out how to start a new topic - I've looked all over and I can't find any guidance. Could someone please direct me to instructions for starting a new topic on the forums? Thanks!

On this page, to the right, look for the orange button, "new topic"

Thanks! It seems painfully obvious now that you point it out. Every forum seems to have a slightly different system...

Why then did I go down from 1200 (to 1361) when I beat someone who has a rating above 1200 (1089)?? Admittedly don't have time to read the article... but hoping someone knows how this works anyway!

Read the article you lazy lump...if you have time to play Chess you have time to read.

Hello everyone! I present you my new app Chess Elo Calculator. The App calculates resulting Elo with pinpoint accuracy. It is available on IOS and Android. I've added the recent tournament results of Magnus Carlsen with the calculation of our App. I hope you like it! https://www.imageupload.co.uk/image/D82G https://www.imageupload.co.uk/image/D82S https://www.imageupload.co.uk/image/D82U https://www.imageupload.co.uk/image/D82a https://www.imageupload.co.uk/image/D82N

Forgive me if this has been addressed before, but if I start a game against someone with a rating of 1500 in a game over a period of 2 weeks and in that time his rating increases to 1600, when my game with him ends does the system calculate using his ranking of 1500 or 1600?

That's actually an excellent question.

My understanding is that chess.com uses the rating at the end of the game. Other sites use the highest ratings during the game.

Wow! A 1200 starting rating is actually pretty high!

can anyone explain how the Tactics points are awarded and/or deducted since I can get, say, 4 correct quite quickly but if I fail on one it seems to deduct several times more points than it Awards when I get them correct, so I end up with four correct but less points than I started with?

That happened to me a lot.

The tactics are rated. Easy tactics problems give you fewer points if you get them right but cost you more if you get them wrong. Harder ones give you more points for a correct answer, and are less heavily penalized if you get them wrong.

Hi,

We started this site with my kid about 2 months ago.. I got up to 1294 in rapid and platoed there for a couple of weeks. Then I started losing regularly and I dropped down to 1205 and the kid also dropped from 990 to 930.. I was wondering if there has been some adjustment in rating system or is it normal to have this kind of fluctuation in ratings? I don't think neither of us has become dumber as it is a short span of time :/

Losing rating points can be disheartening, but from a statistical perspective, it's perfectly normal for ratings to fluctuate within a 100 point range. In blitz and bullet chess, where some people play thousands of games a year, rating fluctuations of 200-300 points are normal.

Dont worry too much about your rating drop. If you play regularly and actively try to improve your game, your rating will climb. Progress is rarely smooth though, and most players reach a plateau before moving forward.

In fact, it is even normal for players to lose rating points for a while as they learn to integrate new knowledge into their game. Progress can be painful at times, but if you keep a positive attitude and work on your game, your rating will reflect your effort!

Thanks for the feedback. I translated all of your message to my boy. He gets quite upset when he loses points and he cries when he loses back to back happy.png  I am having trouble comforting him. I want him to have fun and to continue playing and improving and don't want him to get upset..

He listened with full attention so I think he liked your comments happy.png

And I personally have recovered some points as well, I guess this is the way it is supposed to be.. Thanks.
