I'm new to this site, how do I get a rating?

phudson

You just play a game. The rating will fluctuate quite a bit the first handfull of games, before it determines your "true" level.

Yeah mine has shot way up after four games. I haven't lost.....YET lol. Do you know about how many games it takes to settle down?

Vanrayneman

No, I don't know how many games it takes to settle down. I have four going right now but none are finished yet. This is the first time I've played multiple games at once!

For online chess (like Vanrayneman is playing) it takes 5 - 10 games. For live chess it takes about 20 games to level off. Obviously, the more you play, the more accurate it becomes.

SInce they use Glico here, it should be about 20 games no matter what time controls you are using.

You wouldn't think so with all the crazy online blitzers out there going on about their ratings.

Your rating here isn't important it's just a personal guide. The only ratings in chess that actually matter are FIDE ratings or your national rating. Everything else is subjective and up for debate

Oh, I didn't realize these were'nt "official" ratings. So how do you go about getting FIDE or natianal ratings started?

phudson

You need to join the USCF and play in OTB tournaments.

Thanks. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet. I think I'll just play here awhile! Cool
