I (rating 1394) played a game against a higher rated opponent (1455) and won the game. my rating only went up 7 points and my opponent only lost a few points. can you explain this please ?
corum

It's nothing unusual. It doesn't strike me as odd in any way.

My rating is 1802 and I am currently playing someone who is 2018. If I win I will only gain 11 rating points.

Chess.com uses the Glicko system (rather than the ELO system) - https://www.chess.com/article/view/chess-ratings---how-they-work

In the Glicko system everyone has a rating and a rating deviation (which is a measure of how certain your rating is) known as RD. If you win a game, the change in rating is not just a function of the difference in rating between you and your opponent, but it's a function of both of your RD values too.  The longer you play, it seems to me, that your RD becomes smaller (as the system becomes more certain of your rating) and it becomes harder and harder to get big changes either way. Whereas when you start your rating can change quite wildly after only a few wins or losses. It's more complicated that this. Read the article I link to above if you want to understand it more.

thanks for taking the time to reply. I will read the article you mention

so I guess that means my opponent had a very low glick rd?

sorry that should say "so I guess that means my opponent had a very high glicko rd?"

Cherub_Enjel

No - both you and your opponent had very low glicko - your opponent only lost a few points, as you said. He would've lost a lot more if it were high.

Thanks to all those who answered. my glicko rd is 77, so that would mean my rating is pretty well established?

77 is still quite a volatile RD. I think mine is around 18 or something. But yeah it's not a zero sum game, the amount you win for winning isn't necessarily what the opp loses for losing.
