From what i can gather, Monty Python went down a storm in America, has did the office. And Puppaz, i can't speak for other people, but i thought the American version of the office was hilarious. Batgirl, i've read a lot of your posts and you seem to have a very dry sense of humour like us Brits. Oh, and please give my regards to Bruce Wayne when you see him and tell him i'm still waiting for that money he owes me. Thats why he's a millionaire, he borrows money, then scurries off to his batcave when you go to collect.:)

Over the years, the Americans have bought the rights to several of our comedies and unfunnied them. I have never seen one that they have equalled let alone improved. Now, I'm not saying that the yanks cant do comedy, because some of the stuff they turn out is brilliant. Out of the thousands of sitcoms they churn out every week at least half a dozen contain lots of smile humour, and one or two have even been known to create a chortle.

I obsessively love Family Guy, I don't care that its random humour, thats why I like it in fact. Who needs a plot when you have fights with giant chickens?

Ummm... we've kinda got off topic here hey?

Yeah Family guy is great, and The Simpsons, King of the hill, Seinfeld, cheers. America's made some great comedies over the years. Remember that one from the early 90's that used to be on late at night, Sledgehammer, classic!

My favourite comedy is Father Ted though... Possibly Blackadder.

I love "Father Ted." I think that's some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. I think British humor is far funnier than American humor - even though I'm American. Now, I do really like the US "Office." It's a great Americanization of the British one. Ricky Gervais is an amazing talent. Right up there with John Cleese, if you ask me. "Fawlty Towers" is one of my all-time favorites, too. My friends and I liked "The Young Ones" years back. Something from Australia, believe it or not, that is hilarious is "Kath and Kim." Just crazy, off-beat humor with lots of word play. Ricky Gervais would hate it mainly because of all the tag-lines, but it's still great because it's so silly. Does anyone know what Ricky Gervais is working on currently? I know he's on tour, but surely he and Stephen Merchant are developing something. Let us know if you know.

There's one British comedy thats very underrated and was probably the first to try the reality TV type comedy that the office was famous for. Operation good guys was about the exploits of some British policemen who were useless at their jobs. I think the yanks ripped it off with their Reno 911 ( i think thats what its called ). Series 1 was crap, but 2 and 3 were well funny!

Gervais and Merchant did ' extras ' after ' the office ' which is equally as funny and features a lot of cameos by famous people. De niro's in one episode. we've had two series of this.

Blackadder and Father Ted are great, Only Fools, One Foot in the grave, anything made by Ben Elton, there are loads. Friends was superb from the US. The difference is though, that ours are written by one or two writers, whereas the US use a team of writers every series, and then sack them and replace them to keep it fresh. Its all about budget, and ours are made for a fraction of the cost. The amount of money that American production companies spend on their sitcoms, we should be pissing our pants from begining to end.

Father Ted is Irish. And is there really any need to swear on a site that kids might be using? Flying the flag for Britain eh?

Tonygas you cannot have seen Everyone Loves Raymond if you think that American humour is unfunny.

Yes well... Just look at the re-make of "The Office"...

Ummm... actually lets not.

i'm sorry, i've been watching the office for YEARS (both versions) and the american version is much better. some of the actors/characters in the british one are great (gareth and the boss of course), but the american one is much much richer and nuanced with many more interesting personalities.

and both mr. bean and pee wee herman should be totally ignored.
