I recently came across an old chess set in my parents attic and I am trying to find out it's origin. There is an inscription on the side that says Bellison Tallison Punkyshious Hillmithenus (the first) and I am not sure if this was the owner of the board or the maker...has anyone heard of this name in relation to chess?

thanks in advance

Is it Stauton?

Hi..sorry for the delay but I've been away! Thanks for your question. I don't really know if it's a Staton or not?. How can you tell? It has a signature that looks a bit like Hsomething Staton and the number 42 but it's pretty faded. The only legible thing on it is that name - Bellison Tallison Punkyshious Hillmithenus (the first). I'll look up Staton though as I haven't known where to start :-)

Staunton you should be able to tell from the design. Strangely I googled the name and it came up with the following.

"I wanted to share a funny name story! I was named after my great Nanna who's name was Bella Mithenus. Apparently she had a thing about living in the Hills (she wanted to) so her sons nicknamed her Hillmithenus...anyway long story short her sons ended up giving her a series of silly names and apparently sang songs including these names. The full name they gave her was Bellison Tallison Punkyshious Hillmithenus (I forget where each name came from). Anyway since then my generation has had a few members named in reference to these silly joke names. I am called Bellison, my brother is called Tal, and I have a cousin called Kyshi. Weird I know but it has caused a lot of laughs!!"
