Lots of stuff!

I like this combination:

SCID for a GUI

Some strong engines, I like Stockfish and Houdini

A good database, PGNmentor is a good site to start

Keep you DB updated with weekly updates frim TWIC

bjazz

Houdini is one of the strongest engines at the moment. You could try that with Arena (the graphic interface) which is also free. And a little Chessbase light for archievs.

For playing with engines or on Internet Chess Servers you can download the WinBoard GUI from WinBoard forum ( http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum ). Many hundreds of engines that you can play with it can be downloaded for free.  (E.g. look on http://www.WBEC-ridderkerk.nl )

A newer WinBoard version that also offers some database functions on PGN files, and enhanced analysis features (such as null move) is available at http://hgm.nubati.net.WinBoard-4.5TM.exe .

I was happy with Fritz 12 and Houdini, but now I may have to try some of your suggestions.  Thanks folks.
