Language is naming things. A good language is good at naming things for what they are.
movie = motion picture. Ok.
cinema = kinetic = motion. cinematography = to writing of motion. Very good.
I'm going to the movies. (American, folksy.)
I'm going to the cinema (French. hoity-toity. haute. haughty)
I'm going to the shadow theater (calque from old Vietnamese) and old name. Most correct and most perfect.
If an alien from another planet say, "Take me to a shadow theater." You know exactly what he/she means.
A good language is its honesty in naming things.
Chinese is very unique. It goes through a market place.
I draw a picture. You draw a picture. Our pictures go around. Other people have to accept our pictures. Only then, is a word "sold".
電影 "movie", "film" "cinema". But that's not the real meaning.
電 lightning 电 from rain 雨 = electricity
雨 rain. drops of rain from a cloud 冂 coming down 丨from heaven 一 above.
影 shadow. like shadow lines彡 of a windows' blinds.
電影 electric shadow. What a perfect name! What a perfect language.
You can go to any planet in the Universe, on the Starship Enterprise and say,
"Take me to your electric shadow theater." and the aliens would understand, perfectly.

象Elephant 棋 Game.
象That is a glyph of an elephant. 4 legs, 1 tail, 2 big ears, a trunk.
棋 Game, made of of wood 木, a tree.
Elephant Game. What a perfect name to memorialize its Indian root.
馬 Horse. Glyph of a horse. 4 legs, 1 tail, and an exaggeration of a mane.
車 Chariot. Glyph of a chariot. 2 wheels, 1 axle, and a box.
卒 Soldier. The helmet and the symmetry of a soldier's uniform.
帥 a "general" holding a 巾 trident.

not my native language, but when it comes to Western chess terms, Japanese usually has a lot of loanwords. Therefore, it might be ブランダーする (burandaa suru/to blunder, loanword from English) or 失敗する (shippai suru/ to make a mistake).

But it is called
象棋 Elephant + Game
to commemorate its Indian origin.

I saw a great movie. The Purifiers. It's a Karate movie. But's it's great. One of the star is Chloe Bruce. She's a stunt double in alot of Hollywood movies.
In the near future, London is divided into different clans. (Funny. Current London is divided into different clans, ethnicities.)
To survive in this divided world, the Karate clans look to Feudal Japan as their model, when clans were fighting other clans.
The premise of the movie is that for all the differences in the clans, they all believe in one thing: The best society must produce the best un-armed fighter.
So they duke it out for supremacy in honorable hand-to-hand, face-to-face fights.
What a great movie.
It also demonstrates that martial knowledge is timeless.
And yes. Chess is a martial art. Western Chess and Chinese Chess. (Ok. Japanese Chess too, Shogi, I guess, The Game of the Shogun, but I'm not sold yet.)
