HELP!!! I USUALLY GET NERVOUS AT A OTB TOURNY, MAINLY BECAUSE THEIR ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THERE AND THAT I AM KIND OF UNSURE WHETHER I CAN BEAT THEM. I FEEL QEASY AND DONT LIKE TO PLAY PRACTICE GAMES BEFORE A MATCH. ONLY AFTER A COUPLE OF ROUNDS I FEEL COMFORTABLE BUT I WANT A NICE ATTITUDE FROM THE START! ANY REMEDIES??????

Take a deep breath and calm your self down. I understand what your saying, I know right seeing a lot people make you fel nervous. It's okay jsut feel confident. DOn't look at anyone and focus your game. You should tlak to a chess-friend or so.

Best to take a good sleep, well if I was you i'd eat my favorite food to calm me down ro lick a lollipop. Smile

I think you are right to  avoid practice games before a match -  especially blitz!  But solving a few tactical puzzles,  or going over some basic endings is not a bad idea.  And remember - your higher-rated opponent has a lot more to lose than you do!  So ACT confident,  assured, and 'professional' at the board (even if your knees are shaking!).   The advice here to take your time in the opening,  examining all checks and captures,  etc.,  is very sound.  But don't dilly-dally!

I never got much over 1500 OTB myself,  but I loved the wins against B, and A players,  and one expert.  And a couple of hair-raising adventures with masters (I lost,  but it was great fun!) Almost as satisfying was saving some draws against those higher-rated players who "had" to win - and overreached,  spoiling good positions.  My point in all this nostalgia is to say:  chess is fun;  keep it that way,  no matter who the opponent.

Deep breaths through your belly, not your chest.
