A few years back I was reading a magazine or book and in it was a story about a chess game with a slightly different twist. All the standard rules applied. The object of the game was the same. The "slightly different twist" was the start of the game. It seems that each side alternated moves ,however, White couldn't advance a piece past the 4th rank and Black not past the 5th rank. Also,no pieces could be captured. Once both players were satisfied with their position the game begins with regular rules. Has anyone heard of this variation ? If so what is it called? It seems like a good way to learn/practice tactics. Admittedly I'm a novice so I could be wrong about that😬
Interesting, but no, that's not what I was referring to. Basically what I meant was that both sides, after a series of moves, are set up with their "ideal" position. Then they progress to the game. Though I suppose it would save a lot of time if they'd just put their pieces where they wanted them to start with. The reason they do not,I think, is that they are also trying to adapt or their opponents set up.
True,it could drag on forever. I'm thinking there is more to the rules ( that's one reason I was attempting to find more info on this variation ) or maybe the opponents just agree at some point to start the game.
