Chess vs. bridge

I looked into Cribbage, however I found out that it was very heavily luck-based and that sometimes a Cribbage "master" might even lose to a very novice player. I'll look into Piquet, but there also needs to be a big enough scene where I could routinely get a game and the games should be rated also, like chess ratings.

Bridge does more for me in that you rarely if ever encounter the same exact problem twice so no matter the prep your opponent puts in you can still find yourself on a level playing all the time and if you have your wits about you you can do well.

you can't spell bridge without 'bride'. Therefore bridge is a bad game for girls. 'nough said kids.

i find that chess is more stimulating mentally (and physically Wink)

What I was trying to say is that I like bridge because of the tension, often sexual between partnerships...it makes partners want to prform all the time in a way you dont find in chess

ebillgo

There have been instances of doubles chess in which two players in partnership play against another duo without consultation, very much like bridge.

ah yes in my country its called шахмат Laughing,                                         nomsayin?

duplicate bridge is a great game which I have played for 67 years.

I have noticed many top chess players also play bridge.

There is luck in both chess and bridge but more luck in bridge. To give one example: In a duplicate bridge tournament my partner and I were winning after 26 boards. Then we were paired against a rather poor mom and pop team. They bid the hand very wrong  and ended up in 2 Spades. They should have been in 4 Spades [game] which with normal distrubtion would have about a 77% chance to make. The other pairs were in 4 Spades It just so happened that everything was wrong on the hand. The finesses did not work and spades split 5-zero.

Mom and Pop were down 1 against us but this was a complete top for them and a bottom board for us and we ended up tied for 2nd place.

It is not really correct to say you need to look up 3 other players. If you play bridge on the internet there are many players.

Also, there is a thing called an "Individual" where I do best. In an "Individual" you do not have a regular partner. Your partner changes each hand.  A pair does not win an individual, a  individual wins an individual. About 4 years ago I won an "Individual" of 1060 players.

Except for bullet and blitz chess--bridge is the faster game. You are required to make about 25+ decisions  for an individual hand. [about 4 minutes for the hand]

I often play paired with a bridge robot. Bridge robots have not come near to achieving the playing skills of a chess engine. I would estimate the very best bridge robot at only being the equivalent of a 2000 rated chess engine.

I do not know why bridge robots do not reach the highest levels of bridge?

The very toughest form of duplicate bridge I have run accross is "Money Bridge"  I have played against world class players in this form of bridge.

Money Bridge is played with a bridge robot as a partner.

[PS "Money Bridge" is quite legal in the USA. If anyone wants to play me in some high stakes hands, please feel free to contact me.] Laughing

I've had a go at bridge and thought it was "quite" difficult.

With Chess as soon as you know the rules you can be rubbish straight away... with Bridge you have to learn a lot before you can even dream of being rubbish at it! Laughing

They're both great games and (almost) anything that forces your mind to work differently is a good thing. Smile

Bridge can be both as good as well as as bad as chess. Technicalities.

If one playing card game could be leveled against Chess for a qualitative comparison of best examples of types of games, I'd submit two-player Canasta rather than Bridge.

advancededitingtool1

Bridge is something like chess, canasta is a good pastime, the infamous pozzo, not much of a difference from a certain point of view. The Italian card games are overall fun to play.

BlargDragon

True; the main angle I was coming from is a game that has significant complexity and a solid cultural presence like Bridge, but unlike Bridge has a commonly-played a 2-player variant.

I fully admit that I'm possibly injecting my own preferences, as well. I love 2-player Canasta.

Is it hard

ponz111

Both duplicate bridge and chess can be very difficult.

With  duplicate bridge you can get a robot [called "bot"] for a partner.

Also, with duplicate bridge you can play an "Individual" where you have a different partner each hand. All the other players also have a different partner with each hand. I have had great success playing "Individuals"

bluejonz

i like bridge building

If you play Money Bridge and play at the highest stakes allowed--you will play against world class players.

This cannot be done so easily with chess. How often do you get to play against world class players?

bridge is a silly game because you get work with a teammate

but chess is up to you and your own mind and there is no luck in chess because in bridge the cards shuffle

In duplicate bridge, which most people play--everyone gets the same cards. No shuffling of cards.

Also, in money bridge you and your opponent get the same robot.

[and, besides, there is some luck in chess]
