Garry Kasparov had an IQ of about 135, or something like that. Above average, sure, but nowhere near the smartest people in the world. Hikaru Nakamura took an IQ test (although it was an online test) and he had an IQ of 100, which is very average.
Chess vs IQ

Actually Garry Kasparov had an IQ of 192, and was listed as one of the top ten smartest people in the world at one point.

I completely agree. There is definitely a correlation between IQ and chess. I am simply inquiring as to how strong the correlation is.

I don't understand why people still think Nakamura's IQ is 102 when he obviously didn't take that IQ test seriously at all.

ELO=IQ x 10, still nothing much with an IQ of 135+
Firstly, this sort of thing can only apply to an easily reached target ELO figure. A closer equation might be a quadratic. Something like Target figure T = 5 x IQ + (IQ ^ 2) / 40 + 100.
Just made that up but it could be about right.
I think that zasker was talking about his own elo. I don't think he meant this as a general rule.

I believe Hikaru's actual IQ is around 180.

Good point. Now imagine Nakamura putting the same amount of work into getting better at solving IQ tests that he has put into chess.
Haha, nice

The tricky part about using chess ability as a measure of intelligence is that it's a very specific skillset (and also a skillset that's quite learnable).

True.

That’s not actually true. He never said that, and his teachers said his grades were nothing remarkable, even below average.

Whether that's true or not, using grades as an indicator of intelligence is generally a pretty poor idea. Typically when the IQ of an individual surpasses a certain point, they will actually do worse in school because of factors like boredom, as well as the realization of how little grades matter and the more important things they could be doing with their time, like in this case playing chess.

22. Garry Kasparov (IQ: 190)
Magnus Carlsen's guru, 'legendary' is probably an understatement to describe this chess player. If you didn't know, he's the guy who took on IBM computer Deep Blue for an opponent and won with a score of 4-2. Currently he's focusing on politics and writing after retiring from chess in 2005.

Thank you!
ELO=IQ x 10, still nothing much with an IQ of 135+
that would mean magnus has an IQ of nearly 300, which is literally impossible.
I don't think he meant that this was the case for all people, just for him.
