Over the table if you are good perhaps. Online poker is rigged. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron or employed by an online poker company - which are usually based in unregulated places like Gibraltar. I recall seeing two royal flushes in a week. I once beat three full houses with four of a kind. It's all BS.

Poker is about money....

Chess isn't necessarily.

Why is there such animosity towards poker from the chess community? Especially claiming nonsense such as that online poker is rigged. What would you say to someone who just started playing chess, got crushed and said it is all rigged.

But hey, maybe Fischer was right, the Jews have been fixing matches since the 80s.

You include two strawmen: "animosity towards poker". I was specific against online poker. "Fischer and the Jews". Irrelevant.

I believe you are sponsored by online poker. Anyone looking at your profile and your online presence might draw the same conclusion. Possibly by an online poker company that has adverts on chess.com

Online poker is pretty much poker. At least in terms of skill. Live players are terrible. All of the best players are online players. Even Ivey can't keep up with them.  Animosity towards poker was not a straw man, but a common theme I have seen in chess players, Fischer and the Jews was a joke.

The reason why this is a new account is because I was googling poker and chess and this thread came out and it made me register. I played some chess as a kid but I am not a chess player.

I love both!  The uncertainty element in poker makes it easier to get away with mistakes, and this makes it much harder to analyse post-event and improve (because you can kid yourself that you must have played a hand well if you won money/chips with it).  The same effect also means other players are exploitable.  Chess leaves nowhere to hide, and has a purity to finding the right moves.  Chess feels like the ultimate game of zero-chance; poker like the ultimate game of chance.  Long live both!

Chess just needs a guy like Chris Ferguson. A chess player with a cowboy hat that can throw pawns through a watermelon.

''Chess' has Plenty of the 'chance' element, in it..{imho}. Ie. 'Fischer'.. among, many others, since - Surprised, and possibly 'shocked' 'Spassky'.. {in their famous '72 match}.. When, in at least one game, 'Bobby' 'opened, with.. 1. 'C 4'! ..{or was it 1. 'd 4'!? ..lol}

Then, of course, there's the 'human-frailty' element.. Ie. Over- estimating, how much 'energy'/wakefulness, one has, for another game.. Or even, over- estimating, your own ability - To play, at a commensurate 'level'.. in a 'faster' time-control.

.. And, that leaves unmentioned, {until now}.. How well your 'mind' is able to 'block out' All distracting, mental & physical, extraneous factors! .. Eg, Perhaps, as mundane, as an 'upset stomach' starting up. ..{yikes!}. [ :

Yes, human element leaves everything to chance in chess as well as in poker. Humans tend to view lower rated players as beginners thus making more errors and so forth... just one example...

I don't think 'luck' in chess can be compared to luck in poker tbh. Poker is a game of probabilities, so luck is inherent to it. Luck in chess can be compared to luck in football, but comparing it to poker is too much of a stretch.

There is no luck in chess similar to what there is in poker obviously. Just the human factor you have in all sports.

I hate the word 'luck' because of how imprecise it is. There is no randomness within chess, but all the same, you can't predict perfectly what your opponent will do. Poker has randomness, but even then, it most certainly takes skill to be good at it.

(And, for the pedantic, the randomness isn't truly random, but the method of randomizing is obfuscated enough to be effectively random)

You made me realize that I had no idea how Baccarat is played, so I looked it up. It's a game that is 100% chance, just like Roulette or Slots.

I didn't say the odds were equal--even a coin has an imbalance that lands it on one side more than the other. Banker has a slight advantage that is offset to an imperfect degree by a wager tax. However, once you bet, there is exactly zero you can do as a player to manipulate those odds while the game is in progress.

To be even more precise, the outcome is determined entirely by probability that is impossible for the players to manipulate. You could theoretically track small changes in the odds by card counting and adjust your wager accordingly, but I doubt few human beings could do such a thing in a game that uses 8 decks at a time.
