I think white wins 54% of the total 3 +million games
Chessbase Opening Book Window Question
Thanks for the responses. It appears that N= the # of games won by the color to move from the current position and %= the percentage of games won by the color to move.
The "Help" file for Chessbase leaves a lot to be desired. Is there a published book that thoroughly explains all the numbers, stats, etc?
Skakmati,
I was hoping for some kind of "Chessbase 10/Light for Dummies" book or something that would explain all the details but I do not think it exists. Please let me know if you find one
DonaldLL: Let's look at another one with the "Statistics" turned on:

* N = Number of games. At the top you see the total number of games (2460) which led to the current board position and % = percent of those games won by the color to move (62.1).
In the column itself you see the number of games in which each move was executed.
* %: the percentage of wins achieved using the move highlighted (in CB Light Premium this is always given from the point of view of the color to play). If the number of games is low then the percentage is given in grey because it does not have great statistical significance.
* Av: The Elo average of the players who used the move. If only a small percentage of the players had a rating then the number is given in grey.
* Perf : The Elo performance of the move is the rating a player would have achieved in a fictitious tournament playing the move in all his games.
* Bottom bar chart statistics: For any highlighted move the program displays at the bottom the exact number of games that were won, drawn or lost. The bar graphics on the left make it easy to take in the information at a glance.
On the bottom right “N” = the total number of games in which the move was made (983) followed by either a number or a percent in parentheses. If it is a number then the number represents the number of games in which the move was made (out of “N” games at the top, here 984 games out of 2460). NOTE: it will only be a number if the number is greater than the number of games played. If a percent appears in the parentheses then that is the percent of the “N” games shown at the very top in which the highlighted move was played. So if we replace the 984 in parentheses with, for example, 65%, then that would mean that in 65% of the “N” games at the top (2460) the highlighted move was played.
The remaining figures show the player ratings for both White and Black, along with the total number of rated players. In the above example, White's ratings were 2729-2775 (725 players rated). Black's ratings were 2692-2647 (861 players rated). Note that in most opening trees, the number of games with listed ratings will likely be lower than the total number of games. Such will often be the case, especially when you're working with an opening book you've created from games coming from a variety of sources.
I believe this is correct but if anyone knows better, I'm listening.
The Chessbase (Light Premium) Opening Book window:
Above the top of the list N= # of games (3042556) but what does % (54.0) mean? Note that below, it means the success rate for the particular move.
Also, in the list, sometimes the moves appear in red (bad moves?), green (good moves?), and blue (?). Clarification please.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
