That seems a little low to me...besides, given chess.com's growth potential, I think it's would actually be valued a fair bit higher than that by anyone looking to buy the whole company.

I'll buy chess.com and convert it to a dedicated checkers site?

Valuing a website is usually at least half alchemy.  Probably less so with chess.com, but there are so many variables to consider I wouldn't even guess without being involved in an offer and having specific, verifiable data to assess.

Unless you are a professional, what a website sells for and what is worth tend to be severe mismatches.  As a developer it is my job to crack websites with better ones, so I don't usually buy.  Not opposed to buying secondary webstites within a niche, but owner's overvalue their sites a good 90% of the time.  By the time they understand what is realistic the moment has passed and it is worth even less:))

I ran several of my sites through the domain provided and the numbers were way, way off on all.

buying "real life businesses" is pretty much the same...

I'd prefer to leave the valuation of the site as undefined... I'd rather not contemplate the notion of ICC swooping in, buying the site, and shutting it down.

Hopefully the membership revisions will encourage more people to start pitching in for this excellent service, and make it a more profitable venture for erik!

Perhaps chess.com could go public, sell shares, and then we can all buy in. All my other stocks are in the proverbial toilet! Be nice to own a piece of something with an upside for growth!

Chess.com is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. Nothing more , nothing less....

Traditional valuation methods don't usually work for a web based business.  Any business also has its brand image and off balance sheet worth sometimes called "goodwill".  Coca Cola as a brand is worth more than the sum of its bricks and mortar.  Chess.com most likely is too - so it is not worth what someone will pay for it, chess.com is worth what Erik can convince someone to pay for it and the brand identity that comes with it.

In actuality is it worth the discounted stream of future profits with the goodwill brand recognition thrown in.

I finally got to use my grad school finance class somewhere!  Ta Da - chess.com rocks.
