There was a chess master by the name of Claude Bloodgood.  He did many years in jail for killing his mother over an insurance thing.  While in prison he managed to maintain an interesting and variegated intellectual life.  he played postal chess with opponents all over the world. He had been a chess blitz hustler for years out in california, His is a fascinating life.  But the opening he championed all his life sucks. I dont see nothing good about 1. g4!

Hi HolyFlame777--this is the Grob and it has sort of a cult following on here as well as in correspondence; check out Michael Basman for one of the few strong players who deploys it routinely.  It's rather low on the list of quality first moves, but it's trappy against defenders who don't know what they're doing.  One example is 1. g4 d5 2. Bg2 Bxg4 3. c4, when an incoming Qb3 by white leaves his opponent on the defense.  Besides the story you just told, Claude is also famous for getting an absurdly inflated rating thanks to trouncing so many people within his own prison system.  Play 1. g3 instead, don't kill anybody, and your own life will turn out much better.

You who are an 1830 Bullet player and have played over 1, 300 games!  Id love to play you in five minute blitz. I gaurantee youll be on your toes although you will most likely win.  But you will see that you must be on guard with me.  Yes g3 seems far superior to my humble self. If the point of 1.g4 is to fianchetto why not do 1.g3 instead and create a strong pawn chain down the road and fianchetto as well.  Lets face it Claude to a large degree was a fraud. If that is his favorite opening then im not buying it. But the whole thing is so interesting considering his murder rap and all. But that Bloodgood can do no wrong, Grob is the real deal types, well , they can go on their merry way!  Im good, im just fine without it.  But i love his name and the irony of it all. A man who killed his mother by the name of Blood good.  He spilled blood but he is still good, look!  How he plays chess!
