CLEAN game and rare checkmate…

Hey all! Unusually for me, I’m posting a blitz game. This one was proper smooth, with a nice tactical sequence in what appeared to be a game heading towards a drawish endgame. The eventual checkmate, too, is a great demonstration of the power of knights…

Bullet? Don’t play it unless I’m drunk and even then only ever rated by accident lol

FIDE? Only have a blitz rating of like 1680

Nice win! I wonder what your plan was after 2.e4 vs 2...d5 as the variations with 2.Nf3 vs the French are pretty toothless? 2...b6 was quite a generous offer by the opponent for an opening advantage

The b6 lines are actually very interesting and completely sound (for everything other than classical, maybe, and even there for most levels). It mostly transposes into something called the Owen’s defence, and there’s plenty of very reasonable lines.

That was a very cool checkmate. It's the kind I see when I do puzzle battles and I think to myself, these are neat but will likely never occur in games. Cool to see when they do, especially since it's super rare.
