Clock games

I play a lot of 15/10 games. I keep getting players that take forever on each move. It's like they are purposely running their clock down to 1 min. Then all of a sudden they start moving fast. What is the strategy here? What do they hope to gain by playing this way?

Its your opponents time to do what they want with.

I understand that. I am just curious what their strategy is. If it was just occasionally this happened I would think nothing of it, but 2 out of 3 games I play they do this. Are they hoping I will get frustrated and leave the game?

You would have to ask your opponent.

This is actually a reason I stick with 10/0 games. I like to get the opening out of the way within the first 30sec to a minute, but whenever I play 15/10 my opponent takes so long on just the opening. Like, it’s not that complicated, is it? The first 5 moves?

I don't do well with 10 minute games. I am good on openings and go fast with opening moves but I struggle in the middle game. I have been playing chess for 15 years but my rating does not show it. At one time I was briefly 1400 , now I am around 850. I do puzzles and watch chess videos but I am still stuck in 800's.
