Coaching Offer

Well, I've finally decided I'm ready to do it.  I've practiced for a few months now and put my method together nicely.  Ask anyone I've coached and I'm sure they'll all say I've done a good job.

Anyhow, I am now offering to coach anyone with a rating under 1600 who is interested in taking their game up a level.  I know several 1300-1500 players who love the game but can't seem to get any better, the problem often has an easy solution and only an hour or two of coaching can easily send them on their way to 1800 and above!

My rate is $10/hour(Canadian Dollars), I type at well over 75 WPM so no time will be lost chatting online.

My prefered method of payment is currently PayPal.

If you wish to book a time slot or would like more details please contact me via messaging on this site.

If you are genuinely interested, please contact me as soon as possible.  I will only accept a limited number of students in an effort to deliver the best results to each of them.

More information is available in my coaching profile found by clicking my username and going into my profile.

Best Wishes to all,

Matthew Nicholson

Recent News

I have begun work on a 'book' that is comprised of 50 fully annotated (move by move) games with comments before and after the game.  The game will include typical annotations and commentary (including alternate lines, better moves, blunders, etc.) as well as some of the strategy behind the moves (so as to allow the reader to begin developing the ability to think like the players).  This unique study method will be made available sometime this summer.  This game collection will cost $10.00 for my current students (at the time of release) and $15.00 to all others.  My scheduled release date is July 15/2008.  The collection will be released to all buyers on the same day to prevent 'theft' and will never be released again.  All interested in purchasing this collection should contact me as soon as possible so as to allow me to add you to my mailing list.

A few spaces filled.  I still have a few time slots on Wednesday and Friday left.

Good luck with taking your coaching up a level Matt. I know that when my ratings kept fluctuating and i felt as if my game play was stuck in a rut, your coaching really helped me.

After recieving a couple emails from a few of my students (namely kohai and a couple others) I have noted that many people think I'm being far too modest regarding my coaching skills.  Being a rather objective thinker I refuse to let this get to my head BUT it did motivate me to shop around.   Here's what I found.

1- My rate is the lowest (by a large margin) I found amongst 1800+ coaches.  Some people are asking 50+/hour.

2- My results seem to be considerably better than those shown elsewhere.

3- I am one of the very few coaches who have a success story playing on this very site!

4- My method is far quicker (therefore more cost effective) than the '6 month plans' found elsewhere.

5- My method seems to be more enjoyable!  None of this 'read pages 100-130 of (enter chess book here) before our lesson next week'.  I will give 'homework' at times but it will always involve either playing a game or watching some incredible masterpiece of chess.

Now whether you want to call this fact, an ego trip, or a shameless bump go ahead but the fact remains that @ 10/hour with no obligation you really can't go wrong.

For any interested to try I have decided to take on 2 more students at the moment (my schedule changed allowing this addition).  I have time slots available at 5:45-6:45PM (my time) and another one for any hour between 1:00 and 4:00 PM (my time).

Please contact me as soon as possible if interested.  For more information please read my 'coaching profile' found here on this site.

$50+ is usually for a GM or occasionally NMs with decades of successful teaching experience. A couple price points between these extremes are:

"ZenChess" is a USCF Class A tournament player who advertises $15/hour

"YelenaDembo" is a world-class IM with published books who advertises $35/hour

Very interesting, thanks for posting.  It's good to see the 'competition' :D

If you compare ratings/rates I'm still the best value I think.  ZenChess is also a good coach but a slightly weaker player than myself and 50% more expensive.  YelenaDembo... well, we won't go there... if you have that type of money learn from her, she's amazing!

Good luck with your coaching, when I was offering $10 an hour I was getting quite a lot of inquiries so I think you will do well!

My new job situation however has ended my coaching for now =/

In terms of coaching prices, there is also more 'competition' teachers on ICC.  For instance,  Attila Turzo (IM) charges $20 an hour if you buy a 2 hour lesson.  There are also some coaches around FM level that I believe charge $10-15 an hour.  In my opinion, the strength of a coach shouldn't be your determining factor, but how well you work with the coach and how well it is working for you.  Of course, once you get stronger, then you might need to go 'up a level' in terms of the coach's strength =)

A very nice post.  Thanks.

Now for everyone's knowledge.  My personal work circumstances have allowed me to take on 2 more students.  Please contact me if interested.

Please reread my first post periodically for updates.
