Consulting book openings during online chess?

When playing someone in online chess (not live), is it appropriate to look up the opening you are playing in the database to help decide how to play it?

I'm new to chess.com, and I don't have a good grasp of this point of etiquette.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can use a database for online chess.

"Not live" is an important distinction, and so is the difference between ettiquite and cheating -- this is actually an issue of the latter.

Opening books and databases are allowed, tactics and endgame books are allowed but endgame databases (tablebases) are not.
