Also considering there are 64 squares and only half the number of pieces it would probably be mathematically impossible to create a closed position.It is also,from a real game point of view impossible to create and maintain a real closed position. Therein lies the fury, strategy and the blood bath of a battle.

Its not possible to keep the position entirely closed, but it is possible to turn the position strategic rather than tactical. For example, two of the sharpest openings evah, the Sicilian dragon and the Najdorf, instead of playing the usual 1.e4 c5, 2.Nf3 d6, 3.d4, cxd4, 4.Nxd5 Nf6 5.Nc3, we can play the somewhat ugly move 5.f3 planning c4 and immediately turn the game strategic instead of purely tactical.
