I don't know what is the purpose of creating such type of useless forums? What creator basically aims at?? Increasing his number of forums or giving a mindless topic to start a debate. Chess is still in exploring phase why don't players come up with useful ideas and start focusing something useful. I have seen so many idiotic topics and fed up of this whole crap!

I couldn't beat Morphy if he gave me his entire Queen side, 2 pawns of my choosing, and agreed to sit on the Throne of Swords during the game.

My ratings bear me out on this.

Regards,

Lou

I think you're looking at this one-dimensionally.  First, the forums are here to cater to a large variety of personalities and myriad of topics.  Second, even trollish topics (topics designed to effect a reaction more than an answer) sometimes end up with some beneficial discussion as people tend to drift into unanticipated, often deeper waters.  Some people have fun with these topics you term "useless" and "mindless," while others use them to spring into less "mindless" ideas.

Now since you are "fed up of this whole crap,"  I would expect to see you start and participate some useful and mindful topics (from your profile, I see you haven't started a single one).

Interesting about William G Thomas.

Lets say Morphy gets to choose the first few moves from both sides with knight odds. Now I think the bar is raised at least a few hundred rating points.

No.

Relax. Just move on instead of wasting your valuable time posting about it.

Morphy was playing blindfold exhibitions when he was NINE. He beat the hell out of Anderson. Who had a positive score against Steinitz. I think some of you are severely underestimating Morphy.

" severely under-estimating " doesn't come close.

Whenever an informed discussion of " who was the best " takes place, invariably Paul Morphy is part of that discussion/debate.

And not without good reason.

Todays top GM's have the benefit of Mega databases, computer programmes, GM tutors/coaches, full-time training schedules, and top level competition.

Take away all these "advantages" and transport today's players back to Paul Morphy's time.......I think the natural chess talent of Paul Morphy would prevail.

Transport Paul Morphy to the present time and give him time to aclimatise and have access to a good laptop.....his superior intellect would prevail.

Here's a blitz game I played just now, against Stockfish.  Stockfish gave me knight odds.  Granted, IT'S A BLITZ game... Stockfish thought for just a few seconds on each move, but so did I.  Although it's not a serious game, it's enought show how much knight odds are.

This isn't the first time I've played strong engines, with them giving me knight odds.  It's not hard to defeat them.  Morphy may have been a GM, but he was no Stockfish.

Morphy may also have had "supernatural talent" but a piece is still a piece.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a simple way to play the above game on chess.com or do you have to play it out on a board?  Alternatively, are most of you able to "see" the game by simply reading the moves?

Thanks for giving me a reason to move on. I should continue the remainder of bernd rosen's classical book.

I can see the first few moves, after that, Morphy wins.

t-ram87

I can easily win against any engine with knight odds but it is not valid for human grandmasters. I played lots of knight up against and won, and i played 2 games rook up against a 2200 player it wasnt same and latter was harder. An engine will try to play best moves but human will delude you doing mistakes, attract you, give you false hope, bluff, will try to scare you. Always harder to play a human who knows what he is doing.

Also i dont believe engines better than humans is another issue

That's nonsense.  Read HERE for his blindfold exploits.

Giving pawn odds was often done back in the day to encourage spectator-betting on games played in smoke-filled gentleman's clubs. But giving knight odds was actually a showman's trick for Morphy. He gained some hidden compensation by castling sooner.

I have looked over several GM games and discovered that in many, 1 knight is required, and the other seems to be redundant.

No one in this thread could...

TheGreatOogieBoogie

Umm, some FMs have posted here.  A modern player would have too many advantages over Morphy.
