But don't a lot of them take vows that forbid verbicizing?

They may take a vow, but they're all in the habit....

This thread has gone from bard to verse.

Apparently fo'c's'le is a triple contraction of "Forecastle." Isn't that kind of overkill?

Accidental_Mayhem

Why not make it official and just ban all vowels?

Not really, most of these contractions are spellings of how the words are actually said.

Oh, I know. Threre really isn't any other good way to express dialect in writing. But it still looks kind of silly.

He should of known

When he chanced to roam

Among the benighted horde,

That the sight of the light

Would give ‘em a fright

As ignorance is its own reward.

Don’t feed the trolls!

So the saying goes,

As they’re chafing at the bit

To make up the rules,

Call everyone fools,

Bereft of wisdom or wit.

I should put a smiley at the bottom to show this is supposed to be light-hearted, but I fear that would enrage Mr. Phailure even further. I guess we'll have to put the misunderstanding down to my British sense of humour, or my British accent, neither of which seem to come across well to Americans or Australians. Three countries divided by a common language.

Oh bugger.

I wonder why nuclearturkey fled the site.

Wow, tonydal, a sextuple post. This forum needs a multiquote system :/

As for the "observation" of people becoming self-centered, I would suggest it is merely an illusion. As I have pointed out, people give far more these days, and I think that notion of always taking care of yourself and your own family first is starting to go away. Again, every generation has said that the next is no good, but I think this is really based on observing the older generation changing (becoming more mature and gaining a different perspective) than from the younger generation actually changing.

That's weird, I was just wondering the same thing today.  I wondered where AtomicChicken went too, though.

I wonder what the next iteration will be?  Fission Fowl, p'raps.

Anyway, I hope he's back for a third time.

It shouldn't be too difficult to spot the next rebirth with that naming pattern.

Hey, that's a good one!  To answer your question, see post 274.
