Playing chess with strangers is all the more pleasurable when courtesy is extended.

 

While I appreciate with some folk that all they want to do is play or their English is poor, I find chatting online, even if just saying hello and thanks for the game (sometimes with a brief post game analysis), adds to the experience. (My best memory was a bloody battle with a lively conversation about English professional football going on at the same time that hardly referred to the game at all.)

 

It is nice too when people play their moves regularly, although I appreciate it that some can’t always do this. I try to make moves at least twice a day although sometimes I might pass because to position requires more thought – even so I still try to move, even if I am losing. And if the position is lost I tend to throw in the towel rather than prolong the agony.
