criteria for choosing a coach/mentor

Hi all,

I decided to try the option of getting a private coach/mentor. This additionally to the great material available in the chess.com website for self learning.

I went through the coaches list, and wonder upon which criteria I should choose one?

At first, looking at the rating, and then the price.

However, a good player with high rating, won't be necessarily a good coach...

Any advice on this one?

Thanks

Rating isn't as important as experience. Certainly you want someone rated higher than you. IMO a minimum of 400 points higher than you, but you don't necessarily want a GM. Especially a young GM. They won't be able to understand your problems or how to help you... unless they have coaching experience.

So look for experience. You can also ask their students to tell you about the coach.
