Thanks .  I tried to message you but it said you only get messages from friends so I then sent you a friend request and was told you arent accepting friend requests ....  dag nab it !

e4nf3

Well, I'll go change that. Right now.

e4nf3

Well, first off you have too many "maybe this...maybe that" and hypotheticals. You make me out to be a balloon burster for little kids.

Get a grip, man.

I was specifically talking about a 30 year old who was just being a real jerk. And, what I said about chess etiquette is fully known by experienced, competent chess players.

You are just building a strawman argument and making a fool of yourself in the bargain. Grow up, son. And kick that mayor you've got in the pants for me, will you?

TheOldReb

IMO its not cruel to make multiple queens in winning against someone who is insulting you by not resigning in a hopeless situation and there is no doubt that he IS insulting you !  All doubt was removed when he also offered you a draw !  I avoid playing such people when I can but on the net you cannot avoid playing such people .

e4nf3

Appreciate your wisdom, Reb.

I never did institute the 5 Q ending. My heart wasn't really in it...although I did seriously consider it. Woulda also prolonged the game...let's see, 3 days per move...maybe 10 or so more moves...30 days.

What was bothering me was all the psychological tricks he was playing...instead of playing a decent game. And, I saw from his other games that he did win a lot by other people just chucking it in.

Now, that NYC mayor (my home town, yet)...no sugar, no salt...definitely no guns...even tried to get other mayors across the country in on that. Some of these politicians, including "you know who" forget that they are not the King. (lol)

I would think this would apply more to blitz games, and I agree that people should be more courteous in resigning.  I play 5/0 games a lot and I have had games where the other player lets it time out with over a minute to go when I've had a big advantage.  That's pretty rude, so I just move on to someone else.

On the other hand, a couple of nights ago I had a big advantage and the guy kept playing on.  I was careless and stalemated him, so he got a draw.  I learned a big lesson there.

Your way of dealing with this is a matter for you, but the fact is your opponent was breaching the site's Fair Play policy and should be reported.

Do you actually want people's opinions or do you just want people to come and agree with you?

I can understand a stubborn patzer that just doesn't understand chess very well wanting to play out a "hopeless" game, but offering a draw from a hopeless position is just disgusting.

I guess I wasn't aware of that? What did he breach?

P.S.: It may be just me...but I'm not one to report people. Unless, there is something really egregious...maybe. I'd rather just pop them one in the kisser. lol

Well, no one has to agree with me about anything. Although they really should. Not even my grown kids agree with me. lol

Yeah it was beyond hopeless. Yeah he did offer me a draw. But I'm puzzled. Why do you characterize it as "disgusting"? I didn't feel like vomiting...just laughing.

Reporting people should help to improve behaviour on the site.

Hmmm...I wasn't aware of that. I would suppose that it would be hard to enforce since "wait unnecessarily". It is vague and undefined. No?

There is no real etiquette that forces a resignation, although it is a traditional courtesy, it's never been a requirement.  Besides, it's fun to finish off a dead duck.

If the guy offers a draw in a hopeless position, though, when it is refused he should just resign.  But there is nothing to do if he doesn't, except win the game.

I would caution against trying to show him up with a "5 Q mate" or anything like that.  It's very easy to stumble into a stalemate situation doing that sort of thing.  Instead, make it your object to win in as few moves as possible.  As with any other position, play the best move you can find, end it quickly, and don't play that guy any more if you are offended.

I agree with everything you said.

And, yeah...I did think about getting 5 Qs would be dicey...and it could lead to a stalemate.

No...I would never insist on someone resigning. Nor would I deny them the right to "play on". I do try to be kind to the opposition, too. This was just "one of those things". I did let him know, after it was over: "No rematch for you." lol

Ya' think?  Seems to me it would be more likely to lead to an unintended checkmate rather than a stalemate.  That would be the hard part--avoiding mate with four queens while that last pawns makes the slow march.

We understand, it's just a childish response to a breach of etiquette.

The thing is, it's not that it's childish.  And it's not that it's cruel.  It's stupid.  It's trying to teach somebody a lesson about what they can't get away with doing to you by doing even more of it to yourself.

You want to waste my time?  Amateur.  I'll show you how good I am at wasting my time, mister!

You want to kick me in the shins?  Child's play. I'm going hit myself with this hammer!  Now that's pain.

You want to waste my money?  Not so fast.  How about I just bundle up fists full of hundred dollar bills and throw them off a bridge!  How you like that, punk?!  Now who's wasting my money?  Huh?

It just makes no sense.

Well, sure. Now, I have never gone for a 5 Q bagger. I coulda here. But the risk of a stalemate would be high...that would be bad. The risk of an unintended mate would be high...but that's good.

I was somewhat being rhetorical. I coulda gone for two extra Q's, one extra R, one extra B and one extra N.

Six of one...half a dozen of the other. I don't know...maybe just 5 extra Ns and be done with the mother. lol.

e4nf3

Come on, Lucius. What you are doing is called "transferrence". You are telling me that I am stupid to compensate for your own, self-evident issues.

The impolite person is the one who did not resign in a hopeless position. Not only was he impolite--he was doing an immoral thing--delibertly playing on and causing his opponent time and effort.

The way he ended the game helps to point out that he was doing an immoral thing.

We older guys seem to be the only ones aware of good, old-fashioned chess etiquette.

But, maybe we are the last of a breed...dinosaurs. lol
