d4 or e4?
Been an e4 player all my life, so I am definitely more lenient towards it. It has gotten me to nearly expert otb, too. It is also easier to become an e4 player I believe, thanks to all the literature teaching e4 to beginners and studying to oldest games from the 1800s, which are all about e4 gambits and swashbuckling attacks.
i like b3 because it puts a pawn from the black square to the white square and white squares are nicer
Been playing e4 for almost 10 yrs. Would be hard for me to even switch to d4... like being right handed and trying to be a lefty. So yea, e4 is the best imho.
1.Nf3
It gives you the flexibility to transpose to various d4 or e4 openings, depending on how Black defends.
I’ve been playing 1.e4 for the past 3.5 years, so almost my entire chess journey, and only about 3 weeks ago have I switched for the most part to 1.d4 after watching Roman Dzindzichashvili’s videos on the simplified repertoire.
I have to say that I far prefer the positions after 1.d4 because of how unconfrontational it typically is, the plans also flow well with a guaranteed slight edge for white (e.g. Exchange slav)… and in 1.e4 when entering the Ruy Lopez for example, your theoretical knowledge on it needs to be incredible or you can’t expect an advantage and might even be worse.
Verdict: Both are good, but I stand by 1.d4 against stronger players
