I've had it with the whole database thing I get angrier trying to deal with it than if I had lost a winning game. My problem is this everytime I download a free chess database the problem is always the same non of the databases will let me ADD games ! It's always a message saying error this couldn't execute that or some databases like SCID work so wierdly one day it'll add a game I put in the next it's sasying I can't not even telling me WHY. I'm currently using a database called jose and what a surprise I can't add any of my games to this software either a message comes up saying "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException:can't save new game" and thats word for word I wouldn't be putting up with this but about a month or so ago my coach told me I'm now at a level where I need to start maintainning a database of my games to go back and do quick searches of certain positions etc.... PLEASE HELP im at the end of the rope here when it comes to databases.

I don't suppose you are frustrated enough to consider paying for a working database solution, are you?

Berder

Did you have a database in mind mtwain or are you just trolling?

chessmaster102 I think SCID is the most popular & libre software solution for this.  I'd stop using jose if I were you and go back to SCID.  Maybe there is something wrong with the format of the games - I have sometimes had trouble importing PGN games from chess.com into babaschess due to bad PGN format (e.g. spaces in the wrong place, or not enough spaces).

what do you mean by spaces in the wrong place and not enough spaces ? I can't afford to buy a database so if that was sarcasm it was a failed one of horrible taste.

Berder

babaschess complains sometimes apparently because chess.com's PGN files don't have a space between the move number and white's move.  There are some other factors at work because usually babaschess loads the file no problem, but when there is a problem, adding in those spaces seems to fix it.

SCID is libre and popular, use SCID.

Scid works really well, explain exactly what you are doing, and then somebody can help you get it right.

That just might be the problem it would certainly explain why some games SCID excepts and other times it doesn't i'll try and let you guys know how it turns out thanks.Smile

It wasn't sarcasm.  I guess I really don't understand why you care about keeping a database of your own games, other than it's nice to have.

The free ones from Chessbase  (chesslive.de) tell you what the grandmasters have been playing.  I imagine the ones you pay for are much better.

Even here on Chess.com, as a free member, you get to see your game collection.  That is a database. What do you need your database to do?

If you become a premium member, you get your whole collection.

Again, what do you need your database to do?

things like when I'm searching for a certain opening I played or searching a certain type of pawn structure its not jsut gonna have my games i'm going to add master game from websites that offer them.

+1 on Berder's advice. If that turns out to be the problem, there are DOS command-line utilities available that you can use to clean up the problems.

Never mind I just dont know what im doing wrong this time it saved the game but now I can't locate the game inside the database. I'll just have to save money for chessbase or something or wait till im actually around someone in person who can see just exactly what it is i'm doing and slowly walk me through it. Thanks for the help  tho Berder.
