Debate Poll: Ian Nepomniachtchi is a new world champion or should he play Ding !?

I just don't understand all this contest by FIDE and other players including Ian Nepomniachtchi himself.

1. Ian Nepomniachtchi won candidates "fear and square" no question about it! And by the FIDE rules he SHOULD play WORLD CHAMPION ,  NOT second best or 3rd best or his classmate etc... just strictly World Champion.

2. World Champion forfeits! That's an automatic loss!

3. New World Champion should be Ian Nepomniachtchi plain and simple !

4. Bobby Fischer forfeited in the past and new World Champion was Karpov!

1.Why should Ian Nepomniachtchi play someone rather then World Champion !?

2. Why should  Ian Nepomniachtchi play someone that he already beat in the Candidate and prove that he is superior !?

Kotshmot

I see your point of course, but I don't mind that the two best players (1st and 2nd in the candidates) test their abilities strictly against each other, without match results and performance of other players affecting their play.

Well, FIDE has said that they had an agreement in place to proceed this way.

I think it will be a great match between Ding and Nepo. I also hope that after Nepo wins, he beats Magnus in a couple of tournaments. The dude is a beast when he plays his style instead of the hyper-cautious stuff he threw out in the first WCC match.

He should play Ding

Well, there is some difference to the Karpov situation as opposed to this situation. Karpov did defeat Korchnoi in a 24-game match as part of the right to challenge Fischer to the title. Nepo did not defeat Ding in any match like this.

That said, one could argue that (a) that was a candidates match and not, technically, the world championship match, so Karpov really should have had to play a second, world championship match against Korchnoi, and/or (b) the FIDE champion titles in 2005 and 2007 were determined by a round robin and not by a match, so Nepo really does have some right to claim the world champion title right now.

Weird situation, and I feel like some (a lot) of it is financially motivated. FIDE probably wants at least a few world-class cities to bid on hosting the match, and FIDE probably also gets some money from sponsorships and sales generated during a championship match. I might even speculate that FIDE, especially now, has a desire not to appear biased toward Russian players in any way, so is probably reluctant to hand Nepo the title for that reason as well.

Karpov defeated Korchnoi in a match.
Nepo came out first before Ding in a tournament.
So a match Nepo-Ding should decide.
The rule was agreed in advance:
"2. 2. If the World Champion or the Challenger withdraws for any reason,
he is replaced by the runner-up of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2020."

What happened in 1975 was not the ideal solution. It created controversy, and left some calling Karpov an "illegitimate champion".

We have learned from past mistakes and have improved upon them.

Having the two strongest Candidates players face off in a head-to-head match is an entirely logical choice, if the WC chooses not to (or is unable to) play.

And why not? As a chess fan, this means viewers are still given the opportunity to watch a head-to-head match between the two strongest remaining players, for the highest title.

Plus, if you were to suddenly award Nepo the World Champion title today, the other Candidates participants would cry foul, and argue that, had they known the Candidates winner would automatically be crowned World Champion, they would've played differently.

the reason that they want to still hold a WCC match is because Magnus not taking part is already very damaging to FIDE and the WCC, but then to also not even have a match take place would make the situation really bad. There needs to be a match, especially if Ding Liren is involved, he really does deserve a shot like this at a big event such as WCC.

Hi

Magnus isn't playing so I'm not sure I even care.  What "should" happen is whatever they said would which is what is happening but without magnus it just feels like half a month of slow boring drawish chess not involving the best player.  At least with the candidates you got rapport playing homebrew and 4 boards to hop too ill just watch the Gotham recaps.

The rules are clear enough. Nepo will play Ding, he has to, if he wants to be world champion.

#9
"It was a match in a knockout tournament."
At that time there were Candidates' Matches instead of a Candidates' Tournament.
That was after Fischer's complaint about collusion in the 1962 Curaçao Candidates' Tournament.
Karpov and Korchnoi had played a 24 games Candidates' Final Match.
That are more games than the 14 now for the World Championship Match.

Ian should be a world champion no matter what. If Magnus is getting bored its his decision and we should respect it. But Ian played the candidates like a champion. He was deep into his prep and destroyed everyone. Infact it was a record breaking points tally at any candidates. I can't understand why ppl are hating on Ian just bcoz Magnus forfeited the match. Btw Magnus wanted Firouja to win who was busy playing blitz all night during the candidates. Its an utter disrespect towards Ian.

A world champion who has lost 100% of the world championship matches he's played sounds lame. Don't make Ian a world champion yet. Make him prove he can win at least 1 match.

The way Ian lost in 2020 was an utter disgrace. It was bad on a historical level.

Ian should play Ding.

Chrismoonster

How about do both, Ian Nepo awarded the title, makes his first defence against Ding Liren.
