One thing I noticed is the number of players jumped from 5.9 million to 6.9 million. My guess would be they're including more players in the statistics than they used to.

New accounts that start with lower ratings and play a few blitz games could account for the drop. I think the site only includes accounts that have recently played as well, something like the last 90 days.

I have looked through screenshots of the leaderboards for blitz ratings here and have seen a 29 point decline since last April, which is as far back as I went.
984 from February 2020
That's a decrease of 29 points in the average rating of 6-7 million players.
