Presumably, George Washington played chess. There was a chess set at Mount Vernon when I toured it in 1999.

It's not eating words when they're true as of the time he said them. If he'd said "Trump will never be president", then it's time to put marinara on those words. A careful reading, however, reveals that that's not what happened here.

Jefferson had a chess set which is on display at Monticello, and he had some chess books in his library. There is even a handwritten analysis of R vs B ending, supposedly in his writing.
