did I just experience a bug in the app that cost me the game?!

While I’m still a beginner, I’m pretty what just happened isn’t supposed to happen. See the YouTube video below if you don’t want the whole story.

So I’m playing the computer (Emir 1,000) and it’s getting very close to the end game. I’ve got his king cornered but his queen keeps putting my king in check. I’m finally able to block with my pawn, getting out of check and also have protection from my queen. But after I take my turn...

As you can see in the video (I toggle back and forth between the last couple moves to best show it) I move my pawn from f2 to f4, and black’s e-pawn immediately captures as if I moved to f3!?! How is that possible? Did I just find a bug in the game engine?

I can also post the PGN if that helps?

You've been a member for two years... surely you have heard of en passant

What in the...?! While I’ve been a member for two years, I haven’t been playing on the app/website that entire time. I watch a lot of chess YouTube videos and play in real life as much as I can. But like I said, I’m still very much a beginner.

I thought castling was the big “odd” move that noobs had to learn early on. I have NEVER heard of en passant in all my years of playing! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced it in play either. Wow. You learn something new (in chess) every day I guess.

I think your referring to en present
1c3e51-0

its en passant

JamesColeman

It’s still completely winning for you anyway even after he takes en-passant (as long as you play Kh1). So definitely shouldn’t have cost you the game even if you didn’t know the rule.

Also:
Stalemate is a draw
You can have more than 1 queen after a pawn promotes
A pinned piece can still put you in check
And you can castle queenside even if the b1/b8 square is attacked

I think that about covers it tongue.png

Thanks JamesC. I must not have seen that move because I did manage to lose. But I’ll go back and analyze my game!
