Difference Between Online And Over The Board Chess

You don't have to have cheated to know.

Also in online chess people can use drunk engines to beat you.

Simple Version.

Online you are not distracted by appearance.

OTB if you play an opponent that is a Naked Female, or Male. you will be distracted!

OTB, no mean spirited Trash Talk. You are sitting across the board from me and reference my Mother , My Partner or anyone in my family, you will lose on TIME!

Online your opponent may cheat using , His Tablet, His PHONE!!

OTB you are playing Chess, you treat each other with respect and just play the game.

Online chess is good, if you don't have any opportunity to play OTB. And of course is better from playing against a machine. 

Online there are way more 1900 rated GMs than OTB.......

Big importhant difference is safety. Not talking about your king safety. when you play online bullet or blitz 1 on 1 few games vs same opponent and if the game is very close or you see you have advantage and opponent is playing trash moves it can become very personal and when you blunder or lose in a painfull way you are very angry and you start cursing, making personal threats and saying bullshit..  All that you can not do in real life situation unless you want some trouble.

But at the same time you are sparing yourself same bad feelings if you play online versus over the board - if your opponent OTB  is some casual or very addicted to chess and he does not like you for chess or non chess reasons and want to punch you on the face - online you can avoid that by simply blocking him or just find another game...

Another main difference is OTB you are actually spending a lot of time to play chess. You have to go to specific area on specific time to play specific opponents. Online you can play whenever you want, whoever you want and do whatever else you want thru internet. OTB you do only 1 thing - you play chess.

Another difference is - when playing outside otb , not in clubs, general audience can actually think and say that you are very strong and smart and intelegent, but ofcourse reallity is the opposite.

Also online you can make an excuse - I am tired or i am playing on phone etc, OTB you can't really say anything.. i remember at beginning 3 years ago, when i was playing only bullet , once i embarrased myself by making an excuse after i blundered horrible - i am bullet player , can't play without clock etc.. hahaaa

Some players often say and make this as an excuse when they lose , you did not win, you did not beated me, becouse i gave you gifts - free piece.. you did not outsmart me etc.. But this is part of chess..

Mouse slip is not really an excuse OTB...  while tongue slip is not an excuse online....  

Online chess and in person chess are the same game in drastically different environmental conditions. Some excel at one over the other, a few seem to be indifferent.

  To me it seems much more intense otb but it a heck of alot easier to get a game going online. Otb you often play the same players over and over but this rarely happens online. Otb players tend to be more polite and you rarely run into a troll, on the other hand online you do have a disable chat button which unfortunately not available in otb.

One is played over the board, the other is played on the line.  None is played on the board...  "weird right? I know..." 

Online gives you a better view of the action.

If you have the setting on which requires you to confirm a move before making it, as I do, it also gives you the advantage of knowing exactly what the board will look like if you make a certain move, as opposed to have to try and figure it out in your head and potentially missing something important.

And probably the biggest one for me is that online chess doesn't allow you to make illegal moves. I've often missed that I'm in check and attempted to make a move, realising that it would be illegal. Online saves my blushes!

I'm going to try otb chess in a week. I'm an ok player online but I suspect I'm gonna be awful otb. It's the first time I've played since I was a kid. And I've NEVER played on time otb. 

You all give good answers that I've thought about. 

I think my biggest scare is that I'm gonna be too stressed that I'm probably gonna knock pieces over when I play. I'm fast with the mouse but I feel totally clumsy moving pieces around with my hands in a lets say 5-min game or less. 

Also the 3-dimensional view is probably gonna make me blunder more. I'm totally used to the 2-dimensional view where you see everything very well. 

 

I suspect that a 5-min game online is like a 10-min game otb. There is no way I can move as quickly in a otb-game. 

Some people play online chess haphazardly and quickly, glancing at their screens briefly before making an impulsive move, knowing a new game can start whenever, but for OTB tournaments they may buckle down and think thoroughly for each move.

Others do nearly the opposite... They spend excessive time analyzing moves for online chess, playing like old school correspondence chess, using time they would never ever have in an OTB game to thoroughly flesh out the variations of their candidate moves.

I see lots of guys who are rated 1800-2000 for online chess who are no higher than 1400-1500 OTB and have seen 1800-1900 OTB players (FIDE) get up to 1000 points higher in online chess (I don't know if they are cheating or not).
