804 rapid and 1611 puzzle. Any tips on how I can improve my rating?

However, if you would like to have good results immediately you can begin with the third book (Smithy’s OF), as you will already learn how to navigate through the opening through opening principles.

3600 puzzles pb & 72 survival here:

they become much harder around the 3000 mark... 3500+ puzzles are especially educational to study as the solutions start getting amazingly complex & subtle to successfully work through.

the keys to deriving benefits from advanced puzzles are to forget about trying to finish them quickly & focus instead on understanding the logic of each position while patiently working through all of the separate variations, strictly in your mind.

watching these discussions sometimes feels a bit like how i imagine a math major would think about freshmen complaining how hard algebra is.

stick with it guys they're good for your chess.

How long did it take to get to this level? And how exactly did you practice? I mean, did you do a lot of tactics daily with a quick review of the missed puzzles, or few puzzles but spending a lot of time to solve them properly?

4 years & take all the time you need while triple-checking each move's accuracy...

always review a missed puzzle for the proper path.

And much did your rating improve with all the tactics? We have some guys here around 1000 with a puzzle rating of 2200 or more. I guess you worked also hard in other parts of your game, right?

Your Daily rating (around 1800) is similar to my peak of 1824, but your blitz rating is 600 points higher than my. In fast time controls I am really weak.

yes i've read a great many chess books, went over thousands of grandmaster games, took a thousand lessons here, completed all but two out of the 'endgames' feature & i'll be getting back to puzzles soon enough:  i just took a year-long break to work on my puzzle rush scores & unlocking achievements (133/136 now & soon to be 134).

my game stats are only 1700 average, but they will go up after i finish maxing achievements & start focusing on those... my goal is at least 2000 on each one & i'm a stubborn guy when it comes to goals.  🙂

You are doing well, I am sure you will soon pass 2k. I would be already extremely happy to get 1800 in rapid, but I have to work more straightforward. Actually I would be already satisfied if I could get 1600.

Can't break 300 blitz after thousands of games and I'm 1900 puzzles.   The skills do not translate, at all.

But why blitz? Play 15/10.You will have more time to calculate, make a blunder check before every move. And after the game you will remember much more what you was thinking during the game, so the analysis will bring you more. After you reach 1200 in rapid you can perhaps play 10 minutes games, and if you reach 1400 you can eventually give a try with 5 minutes.  But 15/ 10 is a more interesting format for people who want to improve.

Your puzzle rating will never be truly accurate compared to blitz/bullet since there is no time limit to puzzles. Perhaps if you restricted yourself to doing the puzzles in 20 seconds it could be close. Game modes such as puzzle battle; however, I notice is a good gauge of skill and should be comparable to your in game blitz/rapid rating. It is a shame though that you have to be a premium member to be able to do puzzle battle.

puzzle rush should help blitz & bullet:

i've got a 30/40 pb for 3/5 rush (no errors) & i'm currently at 1865 blitz with 1952 bullet.     🙂

2225 puzzle rating, Blitz is 700-750. I'm having a hard time improving my Blitz rating, which obviously is quite low compared to my puzzle rating

The stability of a building is as strong as its weakest link (and this applies to many other real-life contexts as well).

Your chess knowledge works in a similar manner. Got to work on endgames and reducing hanging pieces too.

In a recent thread I proposed an experiment- how long would a 400 or 500-rated player take to reach 1000 in rapid with the help of a better player? Nobody was interested, even after I offered to help for free. I guess players at this level are simple not used to work in a more structured way. I am still offering my help, in the case you are interested. The idea is to get through some games from time to time to see what can be improved. Something like once or twice a week.  I can imagine that everybody can gain at least 50 points every week, perhaps more, with proper advice. Or perhaps I am very wrong. Anyway, it would be a cool experiment.

When I started playing on chess.com I was already 800 after watching quite a few videos and within a month got to 1000, before watching the videos I would imagine I was 500. If anyone really picked up the game and got very interested they would reach essentially 500 to 1000 in also a month if that devoted an immense amount of time to the game (thinking about it like 12 hours a day, not necessarily studying, but thinking about it like watching videos). Really all depends on how much time you put into the game and how critical you think. I have never been coached to this day, at the time all I simply did was watch youtube videos that were also instructive. I can even remember when I used to look up "every chess tactic that exists" thinking it would take forever to learn them all. I suppose it could also depend on how open-minded your brain is to learning new ways to think, because  like learning a new language, it would be a bit more difficult for an adult to go from 500 to 1000, possibly quite a few months if they tried hard.
