Difference between puzzle rating and live chess

Solving puzzles and finding/creating tactics in an actual game are two totally different things. Puzzle rating doesn't mean much imo.

It means at least something. It means that you recognize a lot of useful patterns. You still have to find them in the games, but without knowing the patterns it is difficult, actually mostly impossible.

I think you can always learn tactics solving puzzles, but that doesn't mean if I am 2200 rating in puzzles I should be 1200 in rapid. Facing a puzzle is completely different from when you face an actual game. When you are doing puzzles you know that mostly there is a way where you can create a big advantage, while  real chess  situations are not that obvious.

And of course, the time management changes it all. Rapid games normally are 10min, and I personally can spend more than 15 minutes trying to solve a single puzzle (and even so I still fail sometimes xD).

By the way, how much time do you spend solving a single puzzle??? Do you try to target the time bonus?? 90%+ of the time I can't get it.

Really? Very strong tactical skills for a beginner! I would say you are doing something wrong in the opening or endgame. With 1900 in puzzles you should be around 1200 in rapid.

I think i just get tilted very easily tbh

I don’t try to think every puzzle unto the end, and this is one of the problems that prevents me to go over 2200 and stay there. Sometimes I see easily the moves, get too confident after 5 puzzles, and begin to guess and not calculate at all, which is of course bad.

This is within the expected range, I guess, 700 to 800 higher in puzzles.

Tails204

Puzzle rating? That's really something to be proud of!

botvinnik1961

1450 rapid, 1600 puzzle

Do you mean it ironically? Proud of improving in chess, yes, and getting better at puzzles is surely a sign that you are doing something right.

Your puzzle rating could be better, perhaps 2200, according to your rapid rating.

Basing off the leaderboard, it seems like the average difference should be 500-600. I'm 1300s in live/daily (though definitely underrated given the way my most recent games have gone and how much lessons I have done since then), and 2500 puzzles.

After 1500 more like 800+ difference. I was 2600 at 1600. Not climbed higher yet.

I am 1000, got 1800 in the puzzles so +800

From reading the many posts here, it seems pretty arbitrary what the difference is between the puzzle rating and the chess rating. Doing the puzzles definitely helps, I think, because it helps you establish patterns and recognize patterns, but I’ve beat plenty of players who had a much higher puzzle rating than I had at the time. Mine is just over 2000 now, but I get beat often by people with much lower puzzle ratings. But again, I definitely feel it’s an excellent tool to improve your chess skills.
