Hello, i am a disabled chess player with a brain injury, i know that chess could be difficult for me because i have sequencing problems but i am determined not to let it get to me.

Are there any other disabled chess players out there?

Hi Lemony. I wouldn’t say that I’m disabled, but I was diagnosed with fairly severe ADD as a child. The doctor recommended chess to help with concentration so my ability to visualize the board or calculate beyond a few moves is crap. But I enjoy chess even though I’ll never be great but it’s helped me. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm not disabled, but at an over the board tournament I once played a blind guy with no legs who had to be on pain medication because of some of his injuries. I know he wasn't able to concentrate very well because of it, but he still showed up and played. I thought that was pretty cool.

So yeah, chess is for everyone, I hope you'll enjoy it too.

I have severe ADHD, and yes, it IS a disability.

Yes i am aware that adhd is a disability, alot of adults are saying now that they have autism and adhd, so it is becoming more recognised and hopefully that will mean that there is more awareness and help for people with this disability.

Hi Lemony, Thank you for your courage and forthrightness. I to have ADD and an anxiety disorder. I once volunteered in hospital, helping those coming back from Iraq with severe injuries. The power of the human spirit is truly powerful. I have personally witnessed people come great ways from this. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors.

Thankyou so much devilsgambit23, it is so lovely to hear such an empathetic story and compare notes.  Well done for volunteering, that is such a good important thing to do.  All the best to you as wellxx

Hi! Just enjoy chess and have an overall good time here, most people are really cool. I think is a great pastime.

And even if now I'm ok I had a car accident and had to spent a lot of time recovering, chess helped a lot with that.

I'm so glad that chess helped you after your car accident, games are such a good cognitive distraction, i'm so proud of you

I guess I don’t view my ADD as a disability, though I suppose technically it is. I get distracted when reading and math can be a jumble, but I’ve still managed to be at the top of my classes. I mean not to be rude, but it’s less of a disability for me than being born, you know, dumb.

I am a disabled chess player (bilateral below-knee amputations) who would love to earn even a basic living taking chess out into the disabled community.

If anyone knows of any routes to funding that might support me in this idea, I'd be very grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

You can reach me on 07821 311 506; hotmail.co.uk;">gerrypb50@hotmail.co.ukboardroomchessclub@gmail.com;

Thank you in advance.

Gerry.
